Little Woman No-Kill Animal Shelter held its Second Annual Open House, “Cinco de Mayo” Celebration on Sunday, May 6th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Guests were greeted at the open gate by a welcoming sign and walked down the tree-shaded path to tour this beautiful facility.

The first building to come into view on the property is the Cats’ Studio, which shelters around eighty healthy, beautiful cats. This home is any feline’s dream—complete with a spacious screen porch for basking in the sun and safely reveling in the glorious outdoors.

For those who wanted to take part in an auction and sale, wares ranging from colorful hanging animal-motif blankets to stone yard sculptures could be seen under a shade tent in the yard. News for discussion among those attending was the continued expansion of Little Woman and the services provided, which would include a Multi-use Building on site.

Vet-Tech, Heiki Ness, guided people through the soon-to-be-opened medical clinic, which is fully equipped to provide medical care for the animals on the property. Commemorating the Cinco de Mayo weekend, the Huntsville Ballet Folklorica provided entertainment. This was truly one of the highlights of the afternoon. Of course, the main focus, as always, was the animals and the wonderful quality of life provided to them by the director of the Little Woman Shelter, Carlos Arreola. Although his original plan was just to rescue a few burros, his vision has widened to encompass many abandoned and unloved animals. Dreams certainly do come true through the hard work and dedication of people who are willing to contribute time and effort to this worthwhile organization.

LWHA RESTING PLACE

The animals that are lucky enough to arrive at LWHA are cared for all of their lives and, in death, are given a befitting resting place. The graves in the cemetery at Little Woman are marked with memorials, statuary and other loving tributes. A needed expansion of this space is currently underway, with the addition of rock, beautiful flowers and other landscaping to make it a place of peace, calm and quiet reflection thanks to the generosity and hard work of our volunteer Leslie Acrey. Hopefully, this garden sanctuary honors both the creatures who rest there and the people who have cared for them.

HAPPY FAMILY

We first saw Caleb a.k.a. Little Boy about a year ago at one of the fundraisers for the shelter. We talked about him from the start about how he would stay off in the background watching and waiting for his time to come. Well after seeing him one other time we could not resist the temptation to adopt him into our family. We were somewhat concerned about how an older dog would take to a new family but after one day at home we knew he was a keeper! What was once a shy dog is now full of confidence and has joined the other dogs in our family pack. We never imagined that we could be so fond of such a small dog, as our others are quite a bit larger, now we wonder how we ever got along without his constant companionship. We want to thank Carlos and everybody else at The Little Woman Home for Animals for taking care of Caleb until he found his way to our home. ~Dave & Kara Veinotte
